  1. 1. Studies in beta cells and adipocytes in the context of obesity and T2D - focusing on PDE3B, OPN and SCFAs

    Författare :Emilia Heimann; Signaltransduktionsforskning; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; type 2 diabetes; islets of Langerhans; adipocytes; PDE3B; OPN; SCFAs;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by altered lipid parameters and elevated glucose levels, as a direct consequence of impaired insulin signaling in target tissues and reduced insulin exocytosis from pancreatic β-cells. Obesity, which dramatically increases worldwide, is associated with insulin resistance and T2D. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Faecal short-chain fatty acids as an indicator of the status of intestinal microbial ecology

    Författare :Urmas Siigur; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Intestinal microflora; SCFAs; Faecal water; Breast-feeding; Metronidazole; Lactose malabsorption; Bacterial diarrhoea; Olestra;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this study were to investigate how faecal concentrations of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) reflect intestinal microbial ecology. Faecal SCFAs and water content were determined in 93 healthy volunteers to establish the normal values in man and the correlations between various SCFAs and between SCFAs and faecal water. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Gut microflora associated characteristics in children with celiac disease

    Författare :Bo Tjellström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Celiac disease; children; faeces; microflora associated characteristics; short chain fatty acids; branched-chain fatty acids; iso-butyric acid; iso-valeric acid; relatives; faecal microflora; faecal tryptic activity; screening;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: The over-arching aim of this thesis was to study some metabolic functions of the gut microflora in children with known or screening detected celiac disease (CD) and their first-degree relatives. Materials: Study I. A number of 36 untreated CD children, 47 after at least 3 months on glutenfree diet (GFD) and 42 healthy controls (HC). Study II. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Role of Melatonin, Neuropeptide S and Short Chain Fatty Acids in Regulation of Duodenal Mucosal Barrier Function and Motility

    Författare :Wan Salman Wan Saudi; Markus Sjöblom; Olof Nylander; Mark Berner-Hansen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 51Cr-EDTA; rat; in vivo; duodenum; enteric nervous system; paralytic ileus; parecoxib; bicarbonate secretion; motility; ethanol; HCl; melatonin; neuropeptide S; short chain fatty acids; chemosensing; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The duodenal epithelium is regularly exposed to HCl, digestive enzymes, bacteria and toxins, and sometimes also to ethanol and drugs. The imbalance of aggressive factors in the intestinal lumen and mucosal barrier function increases the risk of tissue injury and inflammation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Infant microbiota and short chain fatty acids - relation to lifestyle and effect on health

    Författare :Monica Gio-Batta; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microbiota; gut; oral; skin; short chain fatty acids; allergy; siblings; farm; pets; extremely preterm; quantitative culture; 16S rRNA gene sequencing;

    Sammanfattning : The commensal microbiota has both beneficial and negative effects on the host. It is a source of infectious and inflammatory microorganisms, but may also provide immune stimulation during a critical period during early infancy that possibly offers protection against allergy and other immune mediated diseases.
