16. Bone structure characterisation using neutron scattering techniques
Sammanfattning : Bones have unique mechanical properties that originate from their main constituents: mineral, in the form of hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystals, and collagen type-I. The stiffness of the HAp mineral combined with the flexibility of collagen, and their intricate hierarchical arrangement from the smallest individual building blocks to the organ level, result in a composite tissue with a remarkable ability to withstand complex loading scenarios. 19. Phase separation in duplex stainless steel: characterization and mitigation
Sammanfattning : Duplex stainless steel (DSS) is a category of widely used stainlesssteel, which are strategically important in a variety of applications such asin the food industry, chemical engineering plants and nuclear power plants,due to their attractive combination of mechanical properties and corrosionresistance. However, these steel grades are sensitive to the so-called ‘475°Cembrittlement’, because of a phase separation (PS) phenomenon in theferrite phase, which decomposes into Fe-rich ferrite (α) and Cr-rich ferrite(α'), when exposed to temperatures within the miscibility gap. 20. Small angle scattering as a tool to study protein structure and interactions
Sammanfattning : This thesis uses small angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) to gain structural and functional insight into the molecular regulation of critical life processes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic species. The presented studies highlight the strength of combining low-resolution structure determination with biophysical and in silico modelling methods to extensively characterize proteins and their interactions.
