26. Studies of in vivo prostate amyloidosis and autoimmune responses towards amyloid structures in neurodegeneration
Sammanfattning : By using multidisciplinary analysis of CA inclusions in prostate glands of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer, we have revealed that their major components are the amyloid forms of S100A8 and S100A9 proteins associated with numerous inflammatory conditions and types of cancer. We have demonstrated that material closely resembling CA can be produced from S100A8/A9 in vitro and shows the characters of amyloids. LÄS MER
27. Monte Carlo approach to binding and aggregation of disordered peptides
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, theoretical models are applied to study some aspects of intrinsically disordered proteins, i.e. proteins that partly or entirely lack a stable native structure. In particular, focus is on peptide binding and aggregation. LÄS MER
28. Diagnosis and monitoring of sport-related concussion
Sammanfattning : Background: Concussions are one of the most common sport-related injuries and it is known that they cause axonal and glial damage, and that there are risks for long-term effects. The aims of this thesis were to find possible methods, which may help clinicians to diagnose and monitor mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), analyse the APOEε4 allele genotype that has been associated with poor outcome after TBI and evaluate the relationship between neuropsychological assessment and brain injury biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 29. Responses of fibroblasts and chondrosarcoma cells to mechanical and chemical stimuli
Sammanfattning : Osteoarthritis is an inflammation-related disease that progressively destroys joint cartilage. This disease causes pain and stiffness of the joints, and at advanced stages, limitations to the movement or bending of injured joints. Therefore, it often restricts daily activities and the ability to work. LÄS MER
30. Physiological effects of apnoeic oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen
Sammanfattning : In anaesthetic practice, the inability to oxygenate and ventilate patients is a much-feared complication with risk for severe hypoxia-induced adverse outcomes. By administrating oxygen in the absence of spontaneous ventilation, apnoeic oxygenation may overcome these challenges by a prolonged time with sufficient oxygenation. LÄS MER
