  1. 1. Molluscs, Environment and Man - A Bioarchaeological Approach in Sweden

    Författare :Birgitta M. Johansson; Birgit Arrhenius; Urve Miller; David S. Reese; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; molluscs; role of shells; shell use; bioarchaeology; subfossil shells; environmental indicator; molluscs as food; personal ornaments; ethnography; Björkö-Birka.; Archaeology subjects; Arkeologiämnen;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis aims to examine the role and use of molluscs in Swedish prehistory, in chorological and chronological aspects. Molluscs live in the sea, fresh water and on land. The Swedish mollusc fauna contains 623 taxa: 417 marine, 85 limnic and 121 terrestrial species. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering in a Wave-Packet Formalism

    Författare :Sean Miller; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nuclear physics; chiral potentials; two-nucleon scattering;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I analyse the prospect of leveraging statistical analyses of the strong nuclear interaction by using the wave-packet continuum discretisation (WPCD) method to efficiently compute nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering observables on a graphics processing unit (GPU). The WPCD method gives approximate solutions to the S-matrix at multiple scattering energies at the cost of a single eigendecomposition of the NN channel Hamiltonian. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Modulators of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cytochrome c oxidase : Implications for the regulation of mitochondrial respiration

    Författare :Camilla Rydström Lundin; Peter Brzezinski; Christoph von Ballmoos; Shelagh Ferguson-Miller; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytochrome c oxidase; cytochrome c; OXPHOS; membrane protein; kinetics; ligand-binding; electron transfer; Rcf1; respiratory supercomplexes; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria is performed by enzyme complexes and electron carriers that reside in the inner membrane. It is now generally accepted that these respiratory enzyme complexes assemble into larger so-called supercomplexes. However, it is presently not known why, under which conditions or how these supercomplexes form. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Sulphide mineral flotation : a new insight into oxidation mechanisms

    Författare :Alireza Javadi; Jan D. Miller; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mineralteknik; Mineral Processing;

    Sammanfattning : Formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an oxidizing agent stronger than oxygen, by sulphide minerals during grinding was investigated. It was found that pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite ((Zn,Fe)S), and galena (PbS), which are the most abundant sulphide minerals on Earth, generated H2O2 in pulp liquid during wet grinding in the presence or devoid of dissolved oxygen in water and also when the freshly ground solids are placed in water immediately after dry grinding. 5. 5. Small Molecules as Tools in Biological Chemistry : Effects of Synthetic and Natural Products on the Type III Secretion System

    Författare :Caroline E. Zetterström; Mikael Elofsson; Samuel I. Miller; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Type III secretion; salicylidene acylhydrazide; virulence-blocker; virulence; inhibitor; target identification; neohopeaphenol A; Yersinia pseudotuberculosis; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Escherichia coli; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : The increasing use of antibiotics has led to a huge problem for society, as some bacteria have developed resistance towards many of the antibiotics currently available. To help find solutions to this problem we studied small molecules that inhibit bacterial virulence, the ability to cause disease. LÄS MER
