Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to examine the use of symbolic power at the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire and the Cilician kingdom of Armenia, and to further explore and discuss problems of language, translation, ethnography, legitimacy, culture and distinctions between “East” and “West” through these cases. Despite their geographical distance and diverse histories, these regions are united through a past of Byzantine domination and by their entering into unions with the Roman Papacy at this time. Sammanfattning : The thesis explores the meaning and function of tears in Roman political culture during the Republic and the Early Empire in various historical settings: mourning, the law court, and in different political contexts where power, authority, and subjection were expressed or exercised. Sammanfattning : This study discusses the imperial freedmen’s standing in Roman society as it is expressed in literary and epigraphic sources. It has often been assumed that the traditional elite had a general negative attitude towards this group, and previous scholars have interpreted the social standing of the imperial freedmen very differently due to the discrepancy between the legal status and the social status of these freedmen.
