1. Wellbore stability analysis based on a new true-triaxial failure criterion
Sammanfattning : A main aspect of wellbore stability analysis is the selection of an appropriate rock failure criterion. The most commonly used criterion for brittle failure of rocks is the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. LÄS MER
2. Rock damage caused by underground excavation and meteorite impacts
Sammanfattning : The intent of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the origin of fractures in rock. The man-made fracturing from engineering activities in crystalline rock as well as the fracturing induced by the natural process of meteorite impacts is studied by means of various characterization methods. 3. Estimation of the Elastic Moduli of Porous Materials using Analytical Methods, Numerical Methods, and Image Analysis
Sammanfattning : The effective bulk modulus and effective shear modulus of porous materials having various types of pore shapes are investigated, using both analytical and numerical methods. These solutions, and the scaling laws that are derived with the aid of these solutions, are then used to make predictions of the effective elastic moduli of some sandstones and ceramics, based on two-dimensional images of the pore space. 4. Upscaling of Flow, Transport, and Stress-effects in Fractured Rock
Sammanfattning : One of many applications of geohydraulic modelling is assessing the suitability of a site to host a nuclear waste repository. This modelling task is complicated by scale-dependent heterogeneity and coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes. LÄS MER
5. On Free Will as Categorical and Conditional Freedom
Sammanfattning : This dissertation is about a complex of problems, related to the question: ‘Can we ever act differently from how we in fact act?’In Part I, the meaning of ‘can’ and ‘could’ is discussed. It is argued that when we say that an agent could do something he didn’t do (in a sense of ‘could’ involving control), this means, in what is called ‘Decision-Contexts’, that he was conditionally free to do it, and, in what is called ‘Strong-Autonomy-Contexts’, that he was categorically free to do it.
