1. Electron and proton transfer in cytochrome c oxidase
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis describes results from studies on the mechanisms by which the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase catalyses the reduction of oxygen to water. Cytochrome c oxidase is the last integral enzyme complex of the socalled respiratory chain in the mitochondrial inner membrane (plasma membrane of bacteria). LÄS MER
2. Design and Synthesis of Novel HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors Comprising a Tertiary Alcohol in the Transition-State Mimic
Sammanfattning : HIV-1 protease inhibitors are important in the most frequently used regimen for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). For patients with access to this treatment, an HIV infection is no longer lethal, but rather a manageable, chronic infection. LÄS MER
3. The Urban Tapestry : Essays on the Relationship Between Social Networks and Residential Segregation
Sammanfattning : Dominant explanations of segregation argue that patterns of spatial residential sorting are shaped by the aggregation of individual residential choices, guided by discrimination, differences in resources, and preference-based explanations of neighborhood ethnic composition. However, research on social networks indicates that social influence can serve as a driver of collective outcomes that result in social organization. LÄS MER
4. Edge states and transition to turbulence in boundary layers
Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is the numerical study of subcritical transition to turbulence in boundary-layer flows. For the most part, boundary layers with uniform suction are considered. Constant homogeneous suction counteracts the spatial growth of the boundary layer, rendering the flow parallel. LÄS MER
5. Short- and Long-Term Influences of Education, Health Indicators, and Crime on Labor Market Outcomes : Five Essays in Empirical Labor Economics
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to improve the understanding of how several individual characteristics, namely education (years of schooling), health indicators (height, weight, smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise), criminal behavior, and crime victimization, influence labor market outcomes in the short and long run. The first part of the thesis consists of three studies in which I adopt a within-twin-pair difference approach to analyze how education, health indicators, and earnings are associated with each other over the life cycle.
