1. Lung Transplantation: Clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : During the past 15 years lung transplantation has been established as a therapeutic option for patients with end-stage pulmonary disease. The results have improved over time and some transplantation centers now show 1-year survival rates above 80%. LÄS MER
2. The effect of mechanical ventilation on the abdominal organs
Sammanfattning : During mechanical ventilation (MV), the interplay between abdomen and thorax has been studied unilaterally focusing on the effect that an increased abdominal pressure would have on the thorax. Only a small cluster of studies offered a different perspective showing a lower inflammation and a better lymphatic clearance of edema in abdominal organs when spontaneous breathing was applied compared to MV. 4. Fatigue and Peripheral Muscle Dysfunction: Studies on Vitamin D Status, Muscle Metabolism and Systemic Inflammation in Patients with COPD : Aspects of COPD severity beyond FEV1 and exacerbations
Sammanfattning : BackgroundThe severity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is usually described in terms of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and number of exacerbations. However, COPD is a complex disease with different ways of expression, involving pulmonary symptoms, extra pulmonal manifestations and comorbidities, which altogether affect the patient by contributing to reduced functional capacity, increased shortness of breath, reduced health-related quality of life and increased mortality. 5. The effect of mechanical ventilation on abdominal organs : Analysing the role of PEEP and perfusion
Sammanfattning : Background: The effect of mechanical ventilation on abdominal organs is not well understood and investigated yet. Previous studies, using an animal sepsis-like model, found an association between mechanical ventilation (MV) and abdominal edema and inflammation. LÄS MER
