16. Upper and Lower Motoneuron Lesions in Tetraplegia - Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications of Electrical Stimulation
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to improve outcomes and predictability of the treatment of upper extremity function in patients with cervical spinal cord injury and tetraplegia by advancing the diagnostic and therapeutic tools employed in upper and lower motor neuron lesions. An overview is presented of the current knowledge about the principles of electrical stimulation and its usefulness and proven effects on the upper limb. LÄS MER
17. On the actions of neurotrophic factors on the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla
Sammanfattning : Chromaffin cells producing adrenaline or noradrenaline are the predominant cell type in the adrenal medulla, but ganglion cells and Schwann cells are also present. All cells of the adrenal medulla are derived from the neural crest, which is a transient neuroectoderm-derived embryonic structure. LÄS MER
18. Mucosal regeneration following sinus surgery : an experimental study and clinical study
Sammanfattning : The investigations described in this thesis concerned functional and structural aspects of the regenerated sinus mucosa following sinus surgery. In a biopsy material collected pre- and postoperatively from patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, randomized for treatment with either Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) or the Caldwell-Luc procedure (CL), histological parameters were evaluated semi-quantitatively and correlated to endoscopic findings and patients' symptoms. 19. Sarcopenia
Sammanfattning : Sarcopenia (Greek; sarcos: flesh, and penia: poverty) is the pronounced muscle loss that affects the aging population. Sareopenia of the leg muscles results in loss of independence and increased morbidity in the elderly. Emphasizing hind limb motor function, this thesis investigates different aspects of aging and sarcopenia in a rodent model. LÄS MER
20. Interaction between nerve fiber formation and astrocytes
Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder,is characterized by loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. To date, there is no defined cause and cure for the disease. An ideal treatmentstrategy is to replace the lost neurons by transplanting fetal dopaminergicneurons to the brain of parkinsonian patients.
