11. Assessment of Graft Effects and Function in Cell Replacement Therapy for Parkinson's Disease
Sammanfattning : This explorative study aimed to apply, develop, and evaluate assessment methods at various levels in cell replacement therapy for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Observed motor effects in five grafted patients support that timed motor tasks and clinical ratings of parkinsonism are able to monitor motor function, but their psychometric properties need further attention. 12. Dynamic Changes in the Peripheral and the Central Nervous Systems in Patients with Prior Polio
Sammanfattning : After the acute spell of poliomyelitis, patients commonly suffers from sequelae of weakness. Some of these patients experience new weakness after a time period of stable symptoms. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the possible mechanisms for persistent weakness and development of new weakness in prior polio patients. 13. Gene and protein expression in denervated atrophic and hypertrophic skeletal muscle
Sammanfattning : Following denervation skeletal muscles change their functional and structural properties. Some changes resemble conditions in developing muscles and may be important for reinnervation. Due to inactivity following denervation most skeletal muscles loose muscle mass and become atrophic. 14. On CNS injury and olfactory ensheathing cell engraftment strategies
Sammanfattning : The intrinsic regenerative capacity of the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is limited because of lack of nerve-growth stimulatory factors and presence of an insurmountable molecular environment for injured axons. This thesis aims to study neural regeneration following adult CNS injury, using rodent models of spinal cord injury, dorsal root avulsion, and Parkinson s disease. LÄS MER
15. Immune recognition molecules in synaptic plasticity and regeneration of spinal motoneurons
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on the emerging concept that pattern recognition molecules, originally characterized in the immune system, may be expressed and used by neurons to mediate non-immune functions. In line with this concept, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and certain complements proteins have been implicated in synaptic plasticity in the developing visual system. LÄS MER
