1. The importance of long axis function -an echocardiographic study with respect to ageing, response to treatment, prediction of survival and effect of warm water immersion
Sammanfattning : Echocardiographic M-mode measurement of atrioventricular plane displacement (AVPD) and determination of annular velocity with Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is a reliable method to gauge ventricular long axis function for quantification of myocardial contractility and relaxation. The aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of the importance of long axis function with respect to ageing, response to pharmacological treatment, prediction of survival, and enhanced load condition caused by warm water immersion. 2. Gradients of time and complexity : understanding how riparian and instream ecosystems recover after stream restoration
Sammanfattning : Why evaluations of the ecological outcomes of stream and river restoration have largely reported inconclusive or negative results has been the subject of much debate over the last decade or more. Understanding the reasons behind the lack of positive results is important for bettering future restoration efforts and setting realistic expectations for restoration outcomes. LÄS MER
3. Learning how to recover from stress-related disorders via internet-based interventions
Sammanfattning : Stress has become one of the major challenges of modern society, especially within the working population, causing significant costs and personal problems. However, the range of prevention and treatment is not at all proportionate to the needs of the public. LÄS MER
4. Alkaline Urine Dehydration : how to dry source-separated human urine and recover nutrients?
Sammanfattning : Human urine is a renewable resource from which water, nutrients and energy can be recovered and safely recycled. This thesis presents a novel on-site technology, called alkaline dehydration, for recovering nutrients from source-separated urine. LÄS MER
5. Nutrient recovery from waste streams through struvite formation
Sammanfattning : Eutrophication or the nutrient enrichment of water bodies, typically by nitrogen and phosphorus has adversely affected the aquatic life and the quality of water. Governments have been forced to take actions in order to reduce the release of these nutrients into the environment. LÄS MER
