1. Olfaction in Desert Locusts- Anatomy, Function and Plasticity of the Central Olfactory System
Sammanfattning : The anatomy, function and plasticity of the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe (AL), of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria was investigated using a number of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological methods. Anatomical characterisation of the AL in a number of orthopteran species made it possible to deduce a model concerning the evolution of microglomeruli. LÄS MER
2. Odor perception in three Coleoptera: molecule, receptor & neuron
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the sense of olfaction and its links to behavior was studied in the cetoniid chafers Pachnoda interrupta and P. marginata, and the bark beetle Ips typographus. P. interrupta is a pest on sorghum in Ethiopia, and I. LÄS MER
3. Applying the Pump and Leak Hypothesis. An experimental and theoretical investigation of the principles of ion regulation and excitability in the crustacean stretch receptor neuron
Sammanfattning : An invertebrate nerve cell preparation, the lobster stretch receptor neuron, was investigated with respect to maintenance of its resting voltage, intracellular ion concentrations and excitability using voltage clamp technique and ion-selective microelectrodes. It was found that the resting voltage (-65 mV) of microelectrode impaled cells is caused by (a) a homogenous population of K+ channels which we denoted as leak channels (b) an electrogenic and voltage-dependent Na-K pump current and (c) an inward microelectrode-induced "impalement" current carried mainly by Na+. 4. Odour detection in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria: antennal structure and function
Sammanfattning : The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is a polymorphic insect that occurs in two morphological and physiological distinct phases, solitary and gregarious, depending on population density. The two phases are reversible at any developmental stage. The gregarious phase produces and uses stage-specific pheromones, that keep the swarm together. LÄS MER
5. Neural Interfaces to the Odour World of Scarab Beetles
Sammanfattning : Antennal detection and central nervous integration of behaviourally relevant odours in scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was investigated, using the two Japanese scarabs Anomala cuprea and Phyllopertha diversa (Rutelinae), and the Central African fruit chafer Pachnoda marginata (Cetoniinae) as model species. Electrophysiological single cell recordings in A. LÄS MER
