  1. 1. Long-lasting ecological legacies of reindeer on tundra vegetation

    Författare :Dagmar D. Egelkraut; Johan Olofsson; Bruce Forbes; Hans Tømmervik; René van der Wal; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alternative stable state; Herbivory; Historical contingency; Nutrient cycling; Plant-herbivore interactions; Plant-soil feedbacks; Rangifer tarandus; Reindeer herding; Traditional land use; Tundra vegetation;

    Sammanfattning : Reindeer can have strong effects on the plant species composition and functioning of tundra ecosystems, and often promote a transition towards a graminoid-dominated vegetation type. As a result, they influence many ecological processes, such as nutrient dynamics, soil biotic composition and functioning, and carbon storage. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Selection, Maternal Effects and Inbreeding in Reindeer Husbandry

    Författare :Lars Rönnegård; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Nyckelord :breeding programme; communal grazing; randombred populations; Rangifer tarandus tarandus; semidomestic reindeer; gene flow; reindeer; animal breeding; gene flow; random mating; breeding methods; genetic inheritance; population structure; extensive husbandry; sweden;

    Sammanfattning : In extensive grazing systems where several owners’ flocks are allowed to mix, selection strategies will also interact, due to gene flow between flocks. The aim of the thesis was to analyse breeding schemes in terms of genetic gain and rate of inbreeding (?F), given the complexity of ownership and interaction of selection strategies within a mixing reindeer population. 3. 3. Seasonal variations in general activity, behaviour and cutaneous glandular structures in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.)

    Författare :Torgny Mossing; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Androgen; Cervidae; dermal glands; locomotor activity olfactory communicatiorL pheromones; photoperiod; rein deer; rut; seasonal variations;

    Sammanfattning : The locomotor activity of the reindeer is separated into a diurnal and a nocturnal phase which, in turn, consists of a  number of short-term activity bursts. The onset and termination  of diurnal and nocturnal activity are largely in synchrony  with sunrise and sunset. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effects of winter-feeding on reindeer’s future ability to utilize natural pastures

    Författare :Heidi Rautiainen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Winter feeding of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) has become an increasingly common management action in reindeer husbandry in Sweden, Finland, and Norway when natural grazing resources are unavailable due to the loss of grazing grounds, disturbances, and icing events. In the short term, feeding increases survival and reproduction, but the long-term effects on reindeer’s ability to utilize natural pastures have not been investigated. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Adaptations of mobile ungulates in a changing North

    Författare :Christian Fohringer; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The combined effects of global warming and land use changes experienced by animals at high latitudes, are poorly understood. Social and eco-physiological perspectives are therefore necessary to elucidate where and when animals and the ecosystems they represent are most vulnerable to environmental change. LÄS MER
