1. Aspects of Power Consumption in Coherent Fiber-Optical Communication Systems
Sammanfattning : The power consumption of coherent fiber-optical communication systems is becoming increasingly important, for both environmental and economical reasons. The data traffic on the Internet is increasing at a faster pace than that at which optical network equipment is becoming more energy efficient, which means that the overall power consumption of the Internet is increasing. 3. Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy of Metal Nanostructures
Sammanfattning : Noble metal structures with size in the sub 100 nm range exhibit extraordinary optical properties due to collective oscillations of conduction electrons, the surface plasmon resonances (SPR). The most remarkable feature of these structures is the ability to redistribute electromagnetic radiation and concentrate strong fields near the surface. LÄS MER
4. Engine Knock: Characteristics and Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Knock in SI engines limits both power density and fuel conversion efficiency. The main mechanisms with the potential to generate the cylinder pressure fluctuations generally observed during knocking combustion are discussed. It is reasoned that some mechanisms of flame acceleration can further amplify a shock wave generated by autoignition. LÄS MER
5. Mitigation of nonlinear fiber distortion using phase conjugation
Sammanfattning : This thesis is devoted to the study of fiber-optic communication systems that mitigate nonlinear distortion due to the Kerr effect by transmitting a phase-conjugated copy alongside the signal followed by coherent superposition. This kind of communication systems are referred to as phase-conjugated twin waves systems when the phase-conjugated copy is transmitted on the orthogonal polarization. LÄS MER
