  1. 1. The Influence of Hydrogen on the Radiolytic Oxidation of UO2

    Författare :Niklas Hansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; XPS; Dose-Rate; Radiolytic Oxidation; UO2; MOX; Hydrogen Effect;

    Sammanfattning : Spent nuclear fuel from the nuclear fuel cycle contains radiotoxic nuclides which must be safely stored for over 100 000 years. The Swedish final repository concept, KBS-3, is based on engineered and geological barriers that prevent the nuclear fuel from coming in contact with groundwater, which is the most credible vector to transport the radionuclides into the biosphere. 2. 2. Experimental studies of radiation-induced dissolution of UO2 : The effect of intrinsic solid phase properties and external factors

    Författare :Alexandre Barreiro Fidalgo; Mats Jonsson; David Shoesmith; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxidation; dissolution; uranium dioxide; gadolinium; bentonite; sulfide; hydrogen; gamma radiation; radiolysis; hydrogen peroxide; hydroxyl radical; repository; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Dissolution of the UO2 matrix is one of the potential routes for radionuclide release in a future deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. This doctoral thesis focuses on interfacial reactions of relevance in radiation-induced dissolution of UO2 and is divided in two parts:In the first part, we sought to explore the effects of solid phase composition:The impact of surface stoichiometry on the reactivity of UO2 towards aqueous radiolytic oxidants was studied. 3. 3. Homogeneous radiolysis studies using 238Pu

    Författare :Lovisa Bauhn; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :gas mass spectrometry; alpha-radiolysis; plutonium oxidation;

    Sammanfattning : Used nuclear fuel contains radiotoxic elements with lifetimes in the range of 100 000 years. Although possibilities for recycling of the fuel exist, a final storage for the ultimate high-level waste will be necessary. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The interaction of dissolved hydrogen with α-radiolytic oxidants during nuclear fuel dissolution

    Författare :Lovisa Bauhn; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; α-radiolysis; MOX; hydrogen effect; bromide; gas mass spectrometry; SIMFUEL;

    Sammanfattning : Used nuclear fuel contains radiotoxic elements that will need to be kept isolated from the biosphere over a time period of 100 000 years. The KBS-3 geological storage concept aims to prevent the migration of radionuclides into the environment by different engineered barriers. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Radiation induced dissolution of model compounds for spent nuclear fuel : mechanistic understanding of oxidative dissolution and its inhibition

    Författare :Sara Nilsson; Mats Jonsson; Lara Duro; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis is focused on radiation induced oxidative dissolution of UO2, Pd-doped UO2, SIMFUEL (as model substances for spent nuclear fuel) and UN (a possible future fuel) and inhibition of the oxidative dissolution. H2O2 is assumed to be the most important oxidant for spent nuclear fuel dissolution under deep repository conditions. LÄS MER
