  1. 1. The role of adenosine and its receptor subtypes in nociception and neuropathic pain

    Författare :Weiping Wu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adenosine; adenosine receptors; antinociception; caffeine; knock-out mouse; neuropathy; morphine; R-PIA;

    Sammanfattning : As neurotransmitter/modulator, adenosine plays an important role in nociceptive processing. Adenosine receptors are G-protein coupled and four receptor subtypes, A1, A2A, A2B and A3 have been identified. It is well established that adenosine and its receptor agonists produce primarily antinociceptive effect in animals and humans. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Treatment of pain behavior after spinal cord injury in rats with special emphasis on the role of adenosine receptors

    Författare :Margareta von Heijne; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :adenosine; adenosine receptors; allodynia; baclofen; central pain; clonidine; intrathecal; morphine; neuropathic pain; opioid; rat; R-phenylisopropyladenosine; spinal cord injury; tolerance;

    Sammanfattning : Central pain is a form of neuropathic pain occurring after injury or dysfunction in the central nervous system, including the spinal cord. Allodynia (pain to innocuous stimuli) to mechanical and cold stimulation is a common feature of central pain and it is often resistant to treatment. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Experimental and clinical studies on adenosine receptor stimulation in cutaneous hypersensitivity and neuropathic pain

    Författare :Karl-Fredrik Sjölund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adenosine agonists; allodynia; central sensitization; hyperalgesia; nociception; pain;

    Sammanfattning : The endogenous compound adenosine (ADO) has a wide range of physiological effects. Numerous animal studies and a limited number of human studies have shown antinociceptive effects of ADO and its analogues. The spinal cord dorsal column, where ADO receptors are found in high numbers, is a major site of action for this effect. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Neurotransmission in CNS regions involved in pain modulation : neurochemical effects of analgesic drugs and spinal cord stimulation in the spinal cord and midbrain periaqueductal grey of the rat

    Författare :Carl-Olav Stiller; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adenosine; dorsal horn; GABA; microdialysis; neurotensin; opioids; periaqueductal gray; sciatic nerve lesion; receptor binding; spinal cord stimulation; substance P.;

    Sammanfattning : The dorsal hom of the spinal cord and the midbrain penaqueductal grey matter (PAG) are important regions for pain modulation. In this thesis the effects of opioids and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) on the release of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), substance P (SP) and neurotensin (NT) were investigated in these regions of the rat by in vivo microdialysis. 5. 5. Spinal cord stimulation in neuropathy : experimental studies of biochemistry and behaviour

    Författare :Jian-Guo Cui; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neuropathic pain; mononeuropathy; GABA; glutamate; aspartate; galanin; neuropeptide Y; adenosine; spinal cord stimulation;

    Sammanfattning : Neuropathic pain, presenting with cutaneous hypersensitivity, i.e. allodynia, dysesthesia and hyperalgesia, is often difficult to manage with pharmacotherapy, but may be effectively alleviated by electric spinal cord stimulation (SCS). However, the mode of action of SCS is still poorly understood. LÄS MER
