21. Old trees in young forests : Biodiversity management in planted conifer forests in southern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Sweden’s long history of intensive forest management has made conservation measures in the forest landscape necessary to counteract the loss of biodiversity. Retention forestry has been systematically practiced since 1993 and consists of the preservation of different structures and habitats to create and maintain suitable habitats for species that do not cope well with clear-cutting. 22. Fungal assemblages in forest trees : influence of internal and external conditions
Sammanfattning : Forest trees host a plethora of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) whose roles and diversity are still poorly understood despite the increased scientific interest for the past decades. The thesis focuses on the diversity of endophytic and epiphytic fungi in the aerial tissues of broadleaved trees. LÄS MER
23. Plant colonization of oak plantations - the interactive effects of local environment and land-use history
Sammanfattning : In Europe, only small fragments of deciduous woodlands remain intact and species dependent on this ecosystem have declined. In southern Sweden, a shifting trend during the 20th century, with more afforestations on former arable land, resulted in new oak stands. These new stand are either on former arable fields or on continuously forested land. LÄS MER
24. Oak as retention tree in commercial spruce forests : effects on species diversity of Saproxylic beetles and wood production
Sammanfattning : Retaining trees valuable for biodiversity is a common conservation measure. There are indications that such trees have important benefits for the diversity of many species groups. However, retaining trees may also have negative effects on timber production. LÄS MER
25. Evaluating thinning practices and assessment methods for improved management in coniferous production forests in southern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Most of our knowledge about wood production of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and associated silvicultural guidelines are based on field experiments. LÄS MER
