  1. 1. Genetic Analysis of Quantitative Traits Using Domestic Animals : A Candidate Gene and Genome Scanning Approach

    Författare :Hee-Bok Park; Leif Andersson; Stefan Marklund; Robert Fredricksson; Holger Luthman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Domestication; horse; pig; chicken; quantitative traits; candidate gene; genome scan; PRKAG3; MC4R; selection experiment; growth; correlated response; metabolic disorders; Quantitative Trait Loci; linkage; single nucleotide polymorphisms; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Domestication has led to genetic changes that affect quantitative traits in farm animals. Both candidate gene analysis using association tests and genome scans based on linkage analysis have been performed to understand the molecular basis underlying quantitative genetic variation in horses, pigs and chickens. 2. 2. Genetic Analysis of Fat Metabolism in Domestic Pigs and their Wild Ancestor

    Författare :Frida Berg; Leif Andersson; Maria Moller; Stefan Marklund; Sigbjörn Lien; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Genetics; Pig; Quantitative Trait Locus; Fat deposition; FAT1; Linkage map; RH map; Comparative map; Backcross; Identical by Descent mapping; Brown adipose tissue; UCP1; Genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The domestication of the pig began about 9 000 years ago and many of the existing domestic breeds have been selected for phenotypic traits like lean meat and fast growth. Domestic pigs are phenotypically very different from the ancestral wild boar that has adapted to survive in their natural environment. LÄS MER

  3. 3. FROM DISEASE TO THE GENE - Identification of arthritis-regulating loci in rats

    Författare :Carola Rintisch; Immunologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pristane-induced arthritis; Rat strain; Autoimmunity; Rheumatoid arthritis; Quantitative trait locus;

    Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the peripheral joints that eventually leads to cartilage destruction and bone erosion. The causes of RA remain largely unknown, but considerable evidence suggests a multifactorial aetiology involving both environmental and genetic factors. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Exploring Coagulation Properties in Bovine Milk Using Milk Genomics Approaches

    Författare :Frida Gustavsson; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bovine milk; rennet-induced gelation; milk genomics; Swedish Red dairy cattle; milk composition; technological properties; cheese; genetic polymorphism; quantitative trait locus; protein profile; casein micelle; calcium content;

    Sammanfattning : Swedish Red (SR) dairy cattle is the second most common breed in Sweden and hence SR milk quality is crucial for the nutritional value and the processability of the milk delivered to the Swedish dairies. This thesis will give an insight into the quality of milk from SR cows and it will illuminate the possibilities for improvements of both breeding programs and the quality of different dairy products, focusing on cheese characteristics. 5. 5. Mapping Genes Affecting Phenotypic Traits in Chicken

    Författare :Susanne Kerje; Leif Andersson; Martien Groenen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; chicken; Quantitative Trait Loci; growth; egg production; epistasis; plumage colour; Extended black; MC1R; Dominant white; PMEL17; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The purpose of gene mapping is to understand the underlying genetics of simple and complex traits like plumage colour and growth. This thesis is based on a cross between the wild ancestor of the modern chicken, the red junglefowl, and a White Leghorn line selected for high egg mass. LÄS MER
