21. Uncertainty in Quantitative Risk Analysis - Characterisation and Methods of Treatment
Sammanfattning : The fundamental problems related to uncertainty in quantitative risk analyses, used in decision making in safety-related issues (for instance, in land use planning and licensing procedures for hazardous establishments and activities) are presented and discussed, together with the different types of uncertainty that are introduced in the various stages of an analysis. A survey of methods for the practical treatment of uncertainty, with emphasis on the kind of information that is needed for the different methods, and the kind of results they produce, is also presented. 22. Development of quantitative optical microscopy methods for single cell analysis
Sammanfattning : Optical microscopy has brought powerful methods to biological research, in particular the possibility to assay dynamic molecular processes within living individual cells. This thesis deals with various aspects of fluorescence and Raman microscopy, such as the possibility of avoiding cellular damage or stress caused by illumination, how to manipulate single cells for spectroscopic analysis and how to quantify images automatically. 23. Quantitative methods to support drug benefit-risk assessment
Sammanfattning : Joint evaluation of drugs’ beneficial and adverse effects is required in many situations, in particular to inform decisions on initial or sustained marketing of drugs, or to guide the treatment of individual patients. This synthesis, known as benefit-risk assessment, is without doubt important: timely decisions supported by transparent and sound assessments can reduce mortality and morbidity in potentially large groups of patients. 24. Terrain Modelling with GIS for Tectonic Geomorphology : Numerical Methods and Applications
Sammanfattning : Analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs) by means of geomorphometry provides means of recognising fractures and characterising the morphotectonics of an area in a quantitative way. The objective of the thesis is to develop numerical methods and a consistent GIS methodology for tectonic geomorphology and apply it to test sites. LÄS MER
25. Quantitative methods for diffusion measurements in fluorescence microscopy
Sammanfattning : In this work, statistical methods are developed for mapping mass transport locally based on images collected using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Besides presenting raster image correlation spectroscopy as an established method in fluorescence microscopy, we introduce a single particle tracking method which takes advantage of the raster scanning of the image in a confocal microscope.
