21. Integrative omics data analysis to discover novel signatures in complex diseases
Sammanfattning : Apart from diseases caused by the defect of a single gene, most diseases are highly complex and are usually caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors. In the biological context, cellular processes are often tightly connected across molecular layers of the central dogma of biology, and the examination of a single layer would not be sufficient to address disease pathology, therefore, conclusions drawn can be limited. 22. Genetic Analysis of Fat Metabolism in Domestic Pigs and their Wild Ancestor
Sammanfattning : The domestication of the pig began about 9 000 years ago and many of the existing domestic breeds have been selected for phenotypic traits like lean meat and fast growth. Domestic pigs are phenotypically very different from the ancestral wild boar that has adapted to survive in their natural environment. LÄS MER
23. Analysis of factorial experiments using mixed-effects models: options for estimation, prediction and inference
Sammanfattning : In linear mixed-effects modelling of experiments, estimation of variance components, prediction of random effects, and computation of denominator degrees of freedom associated with inference on fixed effects, are important elements of the analysis. This thesis investigates alternatives to the likelihoodbased procedures for analysis of factorial experiments with normally distributed observations. LÄS MER
24. Type 2 Diabetes Genes Contributing to Insulin Secretion Defects
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of environmental and inherited factors influencing the progression of insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion leading to chronically elevated blood glucose levels. The aim of this thesis was to functionally and genetically characterise the species-conserved diabetes locus Niddm1i of the GK rat encoding hyperglycaemia and defect insulin secretion. LÄS MER
25. Novel Statistical Methods in Quantitative Genetics : Modeling Genetic Variance for Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Genomic Evaluation
Sammanfattning : This thesis develops and evaluates statistical methods for different types of genetic analyses, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genomic evaluation. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide novel insights in modeling genetic variance, especially via random effects models. LÄS MER
