6. Identification of novel growth hormone-regulated factors
Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis aimed to identify novel factors involved in the regulation of longitudinal growth and bone mineralization in response to growth hormone (GH) treatment. This was done by performing a single factor study (Paper I) where it was found that growth response was negatively correlated with adiponectin levels during the first year of GH treatment in short prepubertal children. 7. Validation of antibodies for tissue based immunoassays
Sammanfattning : In situ protein detection in human tissues using antibodies reveals the cellular protein localization, and affinity-based proteomic studies can help to discover proteins involved in the development of diseases. However, antibodies often suffer from cross-reactivity, and the lack of positive and negative tissue controls for uncharacterized proteins complicates the mapping of the proteome. LÄS MER
8. The Cerebrospinal Fluid in Severe Pain Conditions : Clinical, Pharmacological and Proteomic Aspects
Sammanfattning : The treatment of both cancer pain and non-cancer chronic pain is still suboptimal. The overall aim of this PhD thesis was to conduct translational pain research at the interface between clinical pain medicine and the field of human proteomics, using the practice of intrathecal analgesia at our institution as a starting point. 9. The efficacy of bacterial viruses against multi-resistant Escherichia coli: from isolation to pharmacology
Sammanfattning : The increase of multi-resistant bacteria highlights that the golden era of antibiotics is ending and that alternative treatmentsare urgently needed. Phages have been historically used to treat bacterial infections prior to the discovery of antibiotics and have gained renewed interest in the past decade. LÄS MER
10. Host-pathogen interactions during Campylobacter and Yersinia infections
Sammanfattning : The innate immune system is known for protecting the host against invading pathogens, for instance enteropathogens infecting the gastrointestinal tract. The production of e.g. antimicrobial peptides, cytokines, and chemokines by innate immune cells and intestinal epithelial cells contribute to bacterial clearance. LÄS MER
