1. Palladium(0)-Catalyzed Spirocyclization and Carbonylation Reactions : Ligands Targeting the Angiotensin II Type 2 Receptor
Sammanfattning : Palladium(0)-catalyzed chemistry represents one of the most important methods for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds, which are ubiquitous in organic compounds. The first part of this thesis describes the palladium(0)-catalyzed diastereoselective Mizoroki-Heck reaction of Vince lactam-derived precursors for the formation of spiroindolines (paper I) and spirooxindoles, which are scaffolds present in several natural products with interesting biological activity. 2. Protein Damage Control during Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation: Role of the Proteasome
Sammanfattning : During the lifespan of organisms ranging from yeast to humans, there is an accumulation of macromolecular damage. However, these organisms produce youthful progeny with low damage levels. This thesis focuses on how this is accomplished. LÄS MER
3. Oxidative Damage in Fish Used as Biomarkers in Field and Laboratory Studies
Sammanfattning : Many toxic xenobiotics entering into the aquatic environment exert their effects through redox cycling. Oxidative stress, incorporating both antioxidant defences as well as oxidative damage, is a common effect in organisms exposed to xenobiotics in their environment. LÄS MER
4. GALIELLALACTONE ANALOGUES – SYNTHESIS AND PROPERTIES
Sammanfattning : Cancer cells use normal cell signalling pathways in a proliferative fashion in order to prolong their own survival. Inhibition of one of the major signal proteins, STAT3 (Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3) has previously been shown to induce apoptosis. LÄS MER
5. Characterization and function of Escherichia coli glutaredoxins
Sammanfattning : Escherichia coli employs two separate pathways, driven by NADPH to reduce protein disulfides: the thioredoxin and glutaredoxin systems. Both systems function via redox active disulfides and are involved in many cellular functions including, the synthesis of DNA building blocks (by reducing the essential enzyme ribonucleotide reductase), the generation of reduced sulfur (via PAPS reductase), and the repair of oxidative damage to protein (by methionine sulfoxide reductase).
