  1. 1. Alcohol and aging : a multimethod study on heterogeneity and multidimensionality

    Författare :Wossenseged Birhane Jemberie; Mojgan Padyab; Fredrik Snellman; Malin Eriksson; Neda Agahi; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; older adults; substance use disorder; alcohol use disorder; comorbidity; recovery; alcohol treatment; aging; healthy aging; integrated care; person-centered care; biopsychosocial model; register-based; longitudinal; latent class; medical behavioral science; medicinsk beteendevetenskap; health services research; hälso- och sjukvårdsforskning; health services research; hälso- och sjukvårdsforskning; psykiatri; Psychiatry;

    Sammanfattning : Background and Objectives: With an ageing population, the number of older persons with substance use problems, particularly problematic alcohol use, is increasing. Despite growing recognition of the negative consequences of problematic alcohol use on older persons, there is a dearth of knowledge about the alcohol use profiles and the dimensionality of alcohol problems in older people. 2. 2. Odor identification in aging and dementia : Influences of cognition and the ApoE gene

    Författare :Jonas Olofsson; Steven Nordin; Maria Larsson; Richard Doty; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Aging; olfaction; identification; dementia; Alzheimer; genetics; ApoE; population based; cognition; demographics; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Olfactory function is impaired in aging and dementia. The general aim of this thesis was to identify variables that predict olfactory function and dysfunction (assessed with an odor identification test) in middle-aged and elderly adults. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Brain characteristics of memory decline and stability in aging : Contributions from longitudinal observations

    Författare :Sara Pudas; Jonas Persson; Lars Nyberg; Emrah Düzel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; aging; episodic memory; individual differences; longitudinal assessment; magnetic resonance imaging; hippocampus; frontal cortex; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Aging is typically associated with declining mental abilities, most prominent for some forms of memory. There are, however, large inter-individual differences within the older population. Some people experience rapid decline whereas others seem almost spared from any adverse effects of aging. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The impact of criminal and externalizing behaviors on aging : Long-term associations with health and dementia

    Författare :Carmen Solares Canal; Henrik Larsson; Jonas Persson; Henrik Andershed; Björn Hofvander; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Older adults; aging; criminal behavior; externalizing behaviors; violent crime; dementia; Alzheimer s diseases; mental health; physical health; epidemiology;

    Sammanfattning : Previous studies have shown that criminal and other externalizing behaviors are associated with several adverse outcomes, but very little is known about the impact of these behaviors beyond middle adulthood. Few studies have explored how a life-course background of criminal and externalizing behaviors influence aging and more specifically, whether it is associated with the onset and development of different neurodegenerative, mental, and physical health disorders when aging. 5. 5. Body mass index, cognitive ability, and dementia : prospective associations and methodological issues in late life

    Författare :Anna Dahl; Stig Berg; Bo Malmberg; Linda Hassing; Eleonor Fransson; Sven Nilsson; Åke Wahlin; Jönköping University; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; aging; body mass index; cognition; dementia; epidemiology; longitudinal; population-based; prospective; Older people and ageing; Äldre och åldrande;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of the present study were to investigate the association between overweight and cognitive ability and dementia, and to evaluate the usefulness of self-reported body mass index (BMI) in late life and various data sources commonly used in epidemiological studies to identify persons with dementia. Data were drawn from three population-based studies: the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA), Aging in Women and Men: A Longitudinal Study of Gender Differences in Health Behaviour and Health among Elderly (the Gender Study), and the Finnish Lieto Study.
