1. Metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for polyhydroxybutyrate production
Sammanfattning : Establishing industrial biotechnology for the production of chemical compounds from the biosynthetic pathway has received a significant boost with the implementation of metabolic engineering. At present, metabolic engineering in Saccharomyces cerevisiae gains significant advantages of integration of knowledge acquired through a long history of use and data acquisition from novel –omics technologies hence enabling the development of a tailor-made S. 2. Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) from a moderate halophile: production and modification for new applications
Sammanfattning : Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a homopolymer belonging to the family of biopolyesters, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) produced by different bacteria and archaea as intracellular granules often under conditions of metabolic stress due to a limited supply of essential nutrients. The properties of the PHAs are similar to those of polyethylene and polypropylene and can hence replace these fossil based polymers in a large variety of applications. LÄS MER
3. Appraisal of strategies to improve thermophilic hydrogen production exploiting Caldicellulosiruptor species
Sammanfattning : The transition from a fossil to a bio-based economy is of vital importance to stem the effects of ongoing climate change. This bio-based economy will necessitate the production of both biofuels and chemical compounds from biologicalsources. LÄS MER
4. Metabolic engineering strategies to increase n-butanol production from cyanobacteria
Sammanfattning : The development of sustainable replacements for fossil fuels has been spurred by concerns over global warming effects. Biofuels are typically produced through fermentation of edible crops, or forest or agricultural residues requiring cost-intensive pretreatment. LÄS MER
5. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics.
