1. Fate and transport of POPs in the aquatic environment : with focus on contaminated sediments
Sammanfattning : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are hydrophobic substances that readily sorb to organic matter in particles and colloids instead of being freely dissolved in the water phase. This sorption affects the bioavailability and environmental transport of the POPs. LÄS MER
2. Neonatal Developmental Neurotoxicity of Brominated Flame Retardants, the Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines developmental neurotoxic effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), PBDE 99, PBDE 153, and the fully brominated PBDE 209, after exposure during the newborn period in rodents. Our environment contains vast numbers of contaminants, including the flame retardants, PBDEs. LÄS MER
3. Organohalogen contaminants in humans with emphasis on polybrominated diphenyl ethers
Sammanfattning : The occurrence and distribution of organohalogen compounds, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in humans was investigated. For this purpose, the previously used method for analysis of organochlorine compounds was modified for the analysis of PBDEs and hydroxylated metabolites of polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs) in breast milk, matemal and cord blood plasma, liver and adipose tissue. 4. Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Environment : A Chemometric Approach to the Study of Halogenated Aromatics
Sammanfattning : Concern is growing about the environmental and health effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), many of which are halogenated aromatic compunds. The research reported in this thesis focuses on factors determining their behaviour and release into the environment. LÄS MER
5. Gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry methods for the determination of environmental contaminants
Sammanfattning : The recent developments and improvements of instrumental methods for the analyses of the environmental contaminants, especially the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), have made it possible to detect and quantify these at very low concentrations in environmental and biotic matrices. The main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the capability of the atmospheric pressure chemical ionization technique (APCI), using gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of a wide range of environmental contaminants, including the POPs regulated by Stockholm Convention, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), but also the derivates of PBDEs and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs).
