    Sammanfattning : Proceeding from land degradation and soil fertility decline in sub-Saharan African smallholder agriculture and drawing on empirical research with smallholder farmers in Tororo district in south-eastern Uganda (2010-2012), this thesis identifies local collective strategies in response to changing livelihood conditions. In an attempt to co-produce knowledge with a transformative potential, the thesis also illustrates how action research can be employed to envision, implement and evaluate a locally anchored practice to improve soil fertility, namely the use of human urine as a crop fertilizer.     Sammanfattning : The Kurdish movement in Turkey has since 2005 been trying to establish democratic autonomy, an overarching proposition for the reconstruction of the society from the bottom up, based on ideals of radical democracy, women’s liberation, social ecology, communalism and more. This dissertation takes the current resistance of the Kurdish movement in the context of democratic autonomy as a starting point to deepen the empirical and conceptual insights on resistance as enacted alternatives (‘constructive resistance’); the role of emotions in resistance; and the ways in which our understanding of resistance could inform research methods.
