1. Detection and identification of Pneumocystis carinii-DNA : emphasis on laboratory diagnosis and occurrence in air
Sammanfattning : Pneumocystis carinii is a fungal opportunistic pathogen, which causes serious pneumonia (P. carinii pneumonia - PCP) in patients with AIDS, leukaemia, and other immunodeficient conditions. The laboratory diagnosis is dependant on microscopic demonstration of the organism. LÄS MER
2. Pulmonary tuberculosis and HIV interaction in a setting with a high prevalence of HIV : clinical, diagnostic and epidemiological aspects
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this study was to elucidate the influence of HIV infection on the occurrence, clinical presentation, diagnostic yield and transmission of M tuberculosis among consecutive out-patients with symptoms suggestive of PTB in a high TB and HIV endemic area. Among 509 consecutive out-patients attending a university hospital in Ethiopia, 33. LÄS MER
3. Computer Simulation of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Reaction Mechanisms and Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibition
Sammanfattning : Protein tyrosine phosphatases catalyse the hydrolysis of phosphotyrosine residues in proteins, which is an important reaction in the cell signalling system. The three dimensional structure of such a protein tyrosine phosphatase has been used in a computational study of the reaction mechanism at the atomic level. LÄS MER
4. Approaches to soft drug analogues of dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors : Design and synthesis
Sammanfattning : The main objective of the research described in this thesis has been the design and synthesis of inhibitors of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) intended for local administration and devoid of systemic side-effects. The blocking of the enzymatic activity of DHFR is a key element in the treatment of many diseases, including cancer, bacterial and protozoal infections, and also opportunistic infections associated with AIDS (Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, PCP).
