1. Platelets : intracellular signalling and cellular interaction
Sammanfattning : Activation of platelets is essential to prevent excessive blood loss at the site of vascular injury. These highly reactive cell fragments are also involved in several pathological conditions, in particular arterial thrombosis, which, in the coronary vessels, can lead to reduced blood flow, vessel occlusion and myocardial infarction. 2. Platelets : with special reference to platelet density subpopulations, stable coronary heart disease and atrial fibrillation
Sammanfattning : The current thesis was divided into two parts. Basic platelet research is the topic of the first section. The subsequent clinical part examines platelet reactivity in stable angina pectoris (AP) and in atrial fibrillation.Platelet heterogeneity was investigated in the first section (papers 1 and 2). 3. Circulating platelets : a novel liquid biopsy source for cancer diagnostics and therapy stratification
Sammanfattning : As conventional tissue biopsies have several drawbacks, much effort has been directed toward the development of minimal-invasive liquid biopsy platforms for detecting and profiling cancer.Platelets are the second most abundant cells in blood and have very versatile functions both in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. 4. Crosstalk Between Activated Platelets and the Complement System
Sammanfattning : Several studies have shown that complement and thrombotic events co-exist. Platelets have been suspected to act as the bridge between the two cascade systems. LÄS MER
5. Role of GPIbαlpha Clustering and N-linked Carbohydrates in the Clearance of Refrigerated Platelets
Sammanfattning : The thesis focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which: 1) the macrophage alphaM-subunit recognizes betaN-acetylglucosamine (betaGlcNAc) residues on the von Willebrand factor receptor complex ((GPIbalpha,beta/IX)2V or vWfR) on refrigerated platelets and 2) refrigeration changes vWfR to elicit recognition through alphaMbeta2. Until recently, the only well-established mechanisms affecting platelet survival were antibody-mediated platelet clearance, consumption of platelets by coagulation reactions, and loss due to massive bleeding.
