1. There and back again... An Earth magneto-tale : understanding plasma flows in the magnetotail
Sammanfattning : On average, the Earth's magnetotail plasma sheet seems to be a calm region of the magnetosphere where the plasma moves slowly towards Earth. However, the plasma sheet actually hosts many phenomena, some of which can affect Earth. LÄS MER
2. Energy Conversion and Particle Acceleration at Turbulent Plasma Jet Fronts
Sammanfattning : High-speed plasma flows (jets) are ubiquitous phenomena in the visible Universe. When the fast plasma flow encounters the ambient plasma at rest, it forms a front where its kinetic energy is dissipated. At the jet front, charged particles gain energy from the electromagnetic fields through heating and acceleration. LÄS MER
3. Auroral electrodynamics of plasma boundary regions
Sammanfattning : The electrodynamic coupling between the auroral ionosphere and the magnetosphere is the main subject of this thesis. Satellite measurements of electric and magnetic fields and of charged particles are used to explore three distinct plasma boundaries, magnetically linked to the nightside auroral ionosphere. LÄS MER
4. Energy Conversion and Particle Acceleration at Turbulent Plasma Jet Fronts
Sammanfattning : High speed plasma flows (jets) are ubiquitous phenomena in the universe. For example, they carry energy from the most powerful sources (e.g active galactic nucleï AGN) to the medium at rest surrounding them. LÄS MER
5. Development and simulated observations of the Jovian Neutrals Analyzer
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the development of the Jovian Neutrals Analyzer (JNA) for the Jupiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission to Jupiter, planned to launch in 2023. Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, orbits the Sun at five times the distance from the Earth to the Sun, accompanied by dozens of moons, rings, and the largest object in the SolarSystem: the Jovian magnetosphere.
