  1. 1. In vivo evaluations of the neutralizing effect of a hydroxyl ion-releasing resin composite and a prophylactic gel on plaque acidogenicity : measured by the microtouch method

    Författare :Anitha Persson; Jan van Dijken; Peter Lingström; Anette Oliveby; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; caries; clinical; buffering; elderly; plaque pH; resin composite; restorations; microorganisms; ODONTOLOGY; ODONTOLOGI;

    Sammanfattning : The prevalence of dental caries has decreased dramatically in most developed countries since the sixties and the number of remaining teeth in adults has increased during the last decades. Elderly as a group will during aging become an increasing risk group for caries. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Xylitol and its effect on oral ecology : clinical studies in children and adolescents

    Författare :Pernilla Lif Holgerson; Svante Twetman; Christina Stecksén-Blicks; Eva Söderling; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chewing gum; dental plaque; dose-response relationship; interdental plaque-pH; oral microorganisms; saliva; xylitol; Paedodontics; Pedodonti;

    Sammanfattning : Xylitol, classified as a natural sugar substitute, has for about 35 years been known as an agent that may act against caries. The mechanism of action; how it inhibits mutans streptococci (MS) and the clinical dose-response relationship are not however fully investigated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Smoking, snuffing and oral health with special reference to dental caries

    Författare :Lena Hellqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; carbohydrates; dental care habits; dental caries; nicotine-containing snus; nicotine-free snus; plaque pH; salivary factors; smokeless tobacco; smoking; snuff; socioeconomic factors; tobacco; Dental Hygiene; Oral hälsa; carbohydrates; dental care habits; dental caries; nicotine-containing snus; nicotine-free snus; plaque pH; salivary factors; smokeless tobacco; smoking; snuff; socioeconomic factors; tobacco;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: This thesis describes oral health and the use of tobacco with the emphasis on dental caries and Swedish snuff (snus). There appears to be a general opinion in Sweden that snus protects against caries, but there are no scientific studies that support these speculations. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effect of Probiotics on Caries-related Variables

    Författare :Sahal Alforaidi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bacterial interference; ; Caries; Caries prevention; ; Dental biofilm; ; Dental plaque; ; Lactobacilli; Lactobacillus reuteri; ; Streptococcus mutans; ; Plaque acidogenicity; ; Probiotics; qPCR; Saliva; Virulence;

    Sammanfattning : In relation to the caries disease, the aims of this thesis were to investigate the effect of probiotic drops on different caries-related variables in vivo (Papers I & III), on interference capability and genetic response to different metabolites in vitro (II) and systematically to review the best mode and dose of administration based on the examined oral outcomes (IV). The effects on colonisation and cariogenic bacteria were studied in plaque and saliva via plating and qPCR-analyses in teenagers and orthodontic patients after short-term exposure. LÄS MER

    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adolescents; Saliva secretion; Plaque-pH; Oral health; Mouth breathing; Gingival bleeding; Cariogram; Caries; asthma;

    Sammanfattning : Objective. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the oral health of young individuals with and without asthma. Material. In Study I, a group of 3- (n=66) and 6-year-old children (n=61) with asthma and two healthy control groups (n=62 and n=55 respectively) participated. LÄS MER
