1. Effect of Probiotics on Caries-related Variables
Sammanfattning : In relation to the caries disease, the aims of this thesis were to investigate the effect of probiotic drops on different caries-related variables in vivo (Papers I & III), on interference capability and genetic response to different metabolites in vitro (II) and systematically to review the best mode and dose of administration based on the examined oral outcomes (IV). The effects on colonisation and cariogenic bacteria were studied in plaque and saliva via plating and qPCR-analyses in teenagers and orthodontic patients after short-term exposure. LÄS MER
2. Fluoride concentration in plaque and saliva and its effects on oral ecology after intake of fluoridated milk
Sammanfattning : According to WHO, the addition of fluoride to milk could be considered as an alternative to water fluoridation for community-based caries prevention in childhood. School-based schemes in developing as well as industrial countries have demonstrated substantial benefits on oral health, but there are limited data available on the local events in the oral cavity after consumption of fluoridated milk. 3. In vivo evaluations of the neutralizing effect of a hydroxyl ion-releasing resin composite and a prophylactic gel on plaque acidogenicity : measured by the microtouch method
Sammanfattning : The prevalence of dental caries has decreased dramatically in most developed countries since the sixties and the number of remaining teeth in adults has increased during the last decades. Elderly as a group will during aging become an increasing risk group for caries. LÄS MER
4. Xylitol and its effect on oral ecology : clinical studies in children and adolescents
Sammanfattning : Xylitol, classified as a natural sugar substitute, has for about 35 years been known as an agent that may act against caries. The mechanism of action; how it inhibits mutans streptococci (MS) and the clinical dose-response relationship are not however fully investigated. LÄS MER
5. Sweet Taste Perception in Relation to Oral and General Health
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to study the difference in sweet taste perception, dental caries and BMI between three different geographical areas (Italy, Mexico and Saudi Arabia) and to elucidate the relationship of sweet taste perception with caries and BMI. Dietary habits were also assessed in relation to sweet taste perception in Saudi Arabia. LÄS MER
