1. Nucleotide-Dependent Processes in the Thylakoid Lumen of Plant Chloroplasts
Sammanfattning : Plants, algae and photosynthetic bacteria are able to harvest the sunlight and use its energy to transform water and carbon dioxide to carbohydrate molecules and oxygen, both important to sustain life on Earth. This process is called photosynthesis and is the route by which almost all energy enters the biosphere. LÄS MER
2. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants. 3. Characterization of auxiliary membrane proteins in the chloroplast of Arabidopsis thaliana
Sammanfattning : In nature, sessile plants have to adapt to their environment and to the never ending changes they are exposed to. They do so mainly by proteomic and metabolomic changes. In all cells, there are complex networks of auxiliary proteins that are responsible for quality control of all the cell's proteins. LÄS MER
4. Plant lipid transfer proteins : Evolution, expression and function
Sammanfattning : The plant non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are known for the ability to transfer different lipids in vitro, but their in vivo functions have not yet been elucidated. They seem to play a role in the defense against biotic and abiotic stresses; the gene expression of nsLTPs is often upregulated when exposed to stresses. LÄS MER
5. Plant-Derived Substances and Cardiovascular Diseases : Effects of Flavonoids, Terpenes and Sterols on Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme and Nitric Oxide
Sammanfattning : Diet has for many years been known to play a key role in the development of chronic diseases. There are clear associations between consumption of vegetables, fruits and berries, and risk of cardiovascular diseases, the number one cause of death in the world. LÄS MER
