  1. 1. Stochastic Models in Phylogenetic Comparative Methods: Analytical Properties and Parameter Estimation

    Författare :Krzysztof Bartoszek; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adaptation; Adaptation; Birth-death process; Branching diffusion; Brownian motions; Conditioned branching process; Evolution; General Linear Model; Hybridization; Macroevolution; Measurement error; Multivariate phylogenetic comparative method; Optimality; Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process; Phyletic gradualism; Phylogenetic inertia; Phylogenetic uncertainty; Punctuated equilibrium; Yule tree; Macroevolution;

    Sammanfattning : Phylogenetic comparative methods are well established tools for using inter-species variation to analyse phenotypic evolution and adaptation. They are generally hampered, however, by predominantly univariate approaches and failure to include uncertainty and measurement error in the phylogeny as well as the measured traits. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Buellia species with pluriseptate spores and the Physciaceae (Lecanorales, Ascomycotina) : Taxonomic, phylogenetic and ultrastructural studies

    Författare :Anders Nordin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Buellia; Diplotomma; phylogenetic analysis; pluriseptate spores; Physciaceae; taxonomy; ultrastructure; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; systematisk botanik; Systematic Botany;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation is primarily focused on the Buellia species with pluriseptate spores, often referred to the section or genus Diplotomma, and secondarily on the Physciaceae. An ultrastructural study at family level gives new information on spore characters. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Phylogeny and Signal Diversity in Widowbirds and Bishops (Euplectes spp.)

    Författare :Maria Prager; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Ploceidae; weaverbirds; stochastic character mapping; phylogenetic uncertainty; mate choice; status signalling; sexual dichromatism; C4-oxygenation; status signalling;

    Sammanfattning : Although sexual selection for elaborate signals is well documented in numerous species, the extreme diversity in signal design and expression in many taxa is largely unexplained. This thesis explores phylogenetic, mechanistic and ontogenetic explanations for divergence in two classic condition-dependent signal traits in the African widowbirds and bishops (Euplectes spp. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Uncertainty Estimation in Models of Multivariate Trait Evolution on Given Phylogenies

    Författare :Woodrow Hao Chi Kiang; Krzysztof Bartoszek; Fredrik Ronquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phylogenetic comparative methods; Branching stochastic processes; Fylogenetiska jämförande metoder; Förgrenade stokastiska processer;

    Sammanfattning : Phylogenetic comparative methods are a set of statistical methods that model the evolutionary history of species, especially in the context where one has data on certain traits of related extant species that have evolved over a phylogenetic tree in accordance to an underlying stochastic process. This thesis presents a Hessian-based closed-form asymptotic confidence region that covers a wide family of Gaussian continuous-trait evolution models; the result has been implemented in an R package. 5. 5. Variational methods for phylogeny and single-cell genomics

    Författare :Hazal Koptagel; Jens Lagergren; Alexandre Bouchard-Côté; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Variational inference; single-cell DNA sequencing; cell lineage tree; Bayesian phylogenetic tree inference; Variationsinferens; encellig DNA-sekvensering; cellhärkomstträd; Bayesiansk fylogenetisk trädinferens; Varyasyonel çıkarım; tek hücre DNA dizilimi; hücre soy ağacı; Bayesçi filogenetik ağaç çıkarımı; Datalogi; Computer Science;

    Sammanfattning : The investigation of the evolutionary history of organisms, both at the cellular level and at the species level, is a relevant research topic in computational biology. These investigations lead to a deeper understanding of developmental history, cancer progression, the genetic similarity of species, and more. LÄS MER
