1. Adaptation and Constraint in the Plant Reproductive Phase
Sammanfattning : Conservatism is a central theme of organismic evolution. Related species share characteristics due to their common ancestry. Some concern have been raised among evolutionary biologists, whether such conservatism is an expression of natural selection or of a constrained ability to adapt. LÄS MER
2. Hidden Diversity Revealed : Genomic, Transcriptomic and Functional Studies of Diplomonads
Sammanfattning : The diplomonads are a diverse group of eukaryotic microbes found in oxygen limited environments such as the intestine of animals were they may cause severe disease. Among them, the prominent human parasite Giardia intestinalis non-invasively colonizes the small intestine of humans and animals where it induces the gastrointestinal disease giardiasis. LÄS MER
3. Bayesian Phylogenetic Inference
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we consider two very different topics in Bayesian phylogenetic inference. The first paper, "Inferring speciation and extinction rates under different sampling schemes" by Sebastian Höhna, Tanja Stadler, Fredrik Ronquist and Tom Britton, focuses on estimating the rates of speciation and extinction of species when only a subsample of the present day species is available. 4. Plant community assembly and biodiversity: a spatio-temporal perspective
Sammanfattning : Biodiversity, the variety of life at all organisational levels from genes to ecosystems, affects ecosystem processes and therefore the goods and services ecosystems provide. More research is needed to provide new insights into biodiversity changes and the processes that drive these changes, in order to formulate effective policy and conservation measures to stop the ongoing biodiversity loss. 5. Diazotrophy and diversity of benthic cyanobacteria in tropical coastal zones
Sammanfattning : Discoveries in recent years have disclosed the importance of marine cyano-bacteria in the context of primary production and global nitrogen cycling. It is hypothesized here that microbial mats in tropical coastal habitats harbour a rich diversity of previously uncharacterized cyanobacteria and that benthic marine nitrogen fixation in coastal zones is substantial.
