  1. 1. Regeneration in the adult brain after focal cerebral ischemia : exploration of neurogenesis and angiogenesis

    Författare :Wei Jiang; Jukka Jolkkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; neurogenesis; angiogenesis; rats; mice; gliosis; BrdU; CBF; protein synthesis; ATP; penumbra; reperfusion; VEGF; 3-D confocal; photothrombosis; MCAO; Medicine; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Ischemic stroke ranks as the third major cause of clinical mortality and the leading cause of handicap in adults. Each year, stroke occurs in about 30,000 Swedes. The severity of an acute ischemic stroke depends mainly on the degree and duration of local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) reduction. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Stroke recovery activity-dependent mechanisms

    Författare :Miriana Quattromani; Neurokirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :Stroke recovery; Photothrombosis; Enriched environment; Bioluminescence imaging; Toll-like receptor 2; Microglia; Neurons; Extracellular matrix; Perineuronal nets; Aggrecan; Proteases; Parvalbumin; Resting-state functional connectivity;

    Sammanfattning : Stroke is the leading cause of disability in developed countries and among the major causes of death worldwide. During a stroke, neurons deprived of their normal metabolic substrates cease to function in seconds and show signs of structural damage after only a few minutes which result in the impairment of sensory and motor function. 3. 3. Reactive gliosis in the injured brain: The effect of cell communication and Nrf2-mediated cellular defence

    Författare :Heléne Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Keywords: astrocyte; gap junction; Hmox1; microglia; Nrf2; Nqo1; oxidative stress; reactive gliosis;

    Sammanfattning : Stroke and other brain injuries trigger an extensive glial cell response referred to as reactive gliosis. Reactive gliosis is characterized by hypertrophic and proliferating astrocytes, proliferating microglia and NG2-positive cells, which eventually form a bordering glial scar around the damaged area. 4. 4. Cannabinoids as neuroprotective agents : a mechanistic study

    Författare :Olov Nilsson; Christopher Fowler; Edward Högestätt; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cannabinoid; neuroprotection; inflammation; cytokine; neutrophil; Pharmacology; Farmakologi;

    Sammanfattning : Glucose and oxygen supply to the brain is critical for its proper function and when it is restricted as during a stroke, neurons and glial cells quickly become necrotic leading to structural damage as well as functional impairment and even death. To date there are few effective therapies that inhibit the neurodegenerative process and improves the outcome for the affected individual. LÄS MER
