1. UDP-sugar metabolizing pyrophosphorylases in plants : formation of precursors for essential glycosylation-reactions
Sammanfattning : UDP-sugar metabolizing pyrophosphorylases provide the primary mechanism for de novo synthesis of UDP-sugars, which can then be used for myriads of glycosyltranferase reactions, producing cell wall carbohydrates, sucrose, glycoproteins and glycolipids, as well as many other glycosylated compounds. The pyrophosphorylases can be divided into three families: UDP-Glc pyrophosphorylase (UGPase), UDP-sugar pyrophosphorylase (USPase) and UDP-N-acety lglucosamine pyrophosphorylase (UAGPase), which can be discriminated both by differences in accepted substrate range and amino acid sequences. 2. Antibiotic resistance in the environment: a contribution from metagenomic studies
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance accounts for hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, and its projected increase has made the WHO recognize it as a major global health threat. In the last decade, evidence has mounted suggesting that the environment plays an important role in the progression of resistance. LÄS MER
3. Characterization of resistance to quinolones, sulfonamide and trimethoprim in Campylobacter jejuni as well as to macrolides in the related bacterium, Helicobacter pylori
Sammanfattning : Gastroenteritis caused by C. jejuni is usually a mild to moderate self-limiting disease. Treatment is recommended in some cases. In recent years, quinolones have been increasingly used to treat acute bacterial enteritis. LÄS MER
4. Characterization of a site-specific gene-transfer mechanism in bacteria
Sammanfattning : Integrons capture and rearrange single genes borne on mobile units called cassettes using site-specific recombination. The integrons increase the variation of antibiotic resistance among bacterial plasmids and may also reorganize clustered genes in bacterial genomes. LÄS MER
5. Co-operative recombination mechanisms promoting gene clustering and lateral transfer of antibacterial drug resistance
Sammanfattning : Transposons of the Mu superfamily are widespread and have been shown to play an important role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance among microorganisms. One of these elements, Tn5090/Tn402 is the basal vehicle of the type 1 integrons in which mobile resistance gene cassettes are inserted to form clusters and operons. LÄS MER
