11. Arachidonic acid metabolism in corneal epithelial cells : Identification of lipoxygenase isoforms
Sammanfattning : The metabolism of arachidonic acid in the human cornea was investigated and compared with the metabolism in cattle and primates. All three species showed significant arachidonic acid metabolism inthe epithelium, whereas the activity in the stroma and the endothelium was low or undetectable. LÄS MER
12. The Role of the Melanocortin System in Linking Energy Homeostasis with Reward Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : There is evidence of a link between peripheral signals of energy homeostasis and reward mechanisms. A hypothesis was formulated that the melanocortin (MC) system is part of this link. The hypothesis was tested by a series of receptor expression and neurochemical studies in rats. LÄS MER
13. Involvement of the Opioid System in High Alcohol Consumption : Environmental and Genetic Influences
Sammanfattning : It is well accepted that both inherent and environmental factors influence the pathogenesis of alcohol dependence. This thesis investigates the role of the opioid system in the initiation and maintenance of high ethanol intake. LÄS MER
14. Modelling of melanocortin receptors and their ligands
Sammanfattning : Five subtypes of melanocortin receptors (MC1-MC5R) mediate a wide range of physiological actions, including control of skin tanning, inflammation and food intake. The natural ligands for these receptors are the melanocortins, which are linear peptides 11 to 39 amino acids long. LÄS MER
15. β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA)-induced neurotoxicity : Studies in vitro and in vivo
Sammanfattning : β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxic non-proteinogenic amino acid produced naturally by cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates and it has been detected in samples from fresh and marine water from all over the world. It can bioaccumulate in fish and shellfish, and has a potential to biomagnify in a terrestrial food chain. LÄS MER
