6. Immunopathogenesis of Gai2-deficient mice. A model of inflammatory bowel disease
Sammanfattning : The intestinal mucosa is the largest lymphoid organ in the body, and it simultaneously has to protect us from any pathogen that might enter the gastrointestinal tract as well as maintaining tolerance to most antigens, mainly in the form of dietary constituents and microbial products. A dysfunctional control of local intestinal immune responses may lead to development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - the common name for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn´s disease (CD). 7. Respiratory tract infections, reflex apnea and sudden infant death : experimental and epidemiological studies with special reference to respiratory syncytial virus, Bordetella pertussis and sleep position
Sammanfattning : The seasonal distribution of Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) followed the prevalence of respiratory tract infections (RTI) when prone sleeping position was recommended, but this covariation has recently been attenuated. Airway infections in the young infant are known to produce respiratory disturbances. LÄS MER
8. Laboratory diagnosis of Bordetella infection : DNA hybridization and PCR validated against serology and culture in a phase 3 vaccine efficacy trial
Sammanfattning : The present study has focused on developing and validating assays alternative to culture for detection of Bordetella pertussis. The sensitivity of culture is comparatively low when compared to serology, varying from 30% to 80%. An attempt to increase this sensitivity was made by development of assays detecting the DNA of the bacteria. LÄS MER
9. Vaccine-induced aluminium allergy and long-lasting subcutaneous itching nodules
Sammanfattning : Background: Aluminium contact dermatitis is rare even though aluminium is frequently used in antiperspirants and sunscreens. Sensitisation to aluminium is mostly a side effect of aluminium-adsorbed vaccines. These can also induce long-lasting intensely itching subcutaneous nodules (granulomas) at the injection site. 10. Regulation of vaccine immunity : from myeloid cell functions to antibody responses
Sammanfattning : The generation of vaccine-induced protection against infections relies on a well-coordinated network of innate immune responses, adaptive cellular responses, and humoral responses. Sufficient stimulation of the innate immune system by vaccination is critical to subsequently induce effective pathogen-specific T cell and B cell responses. LÄS MER
