1. Inflammatory Response in Peripheral Arterial Disease
Sammanfattning : Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is the manifestation of atherosclerotic lesions in arteries supplying blood to the legs. Atherosclerosis is now recognized as an inflammatory disease of the vessel wall and important features in the pathophysiology are activation of WBC, endothelial cells and increased levels of inflammatory mediators. 2. Diabetes and peripheral arterial disease
Sammanfattning : Background: Diabetes mellitus increases the risk for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) early in life and the disease is likely to progress to advanced stages. Mechanisms responsible for premature PAD in diabetes are partly unknown. LÄS MER
3. Epidemiological aspects of peripheral arterial disease
Sammanfattning : Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is defined as atherosclerosis in the arteries distal to the aortic bifurcation, with or without symptoms in the legs. It is diagnosed by ankle brachial pressure index (ABI) measurements and symptoms, and a confirmed diagnosis is associated with an increased cardiovascular (CV) mortality reaching the same levels as in patients with symptomatic coronary disease. 4. Life situation in people with peripheral arterial disease and their family members
Sammanfattning : Life with peripheral arterial disease and the resulting impaired walking ability leads to major limitations in daily life and a decreased quality of life. The overall aim of this thesis was to generate understanding about the life situation among people living with peripheral arterial disease and their family members. LÄS MER
5. Importance of peripheral arterial disease as a risk marker in patients with myocardial infarction
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to describe the true prevalence of widespread arterial disease in a cohort with patients with a recent myocardial infarction (MI) to find valuable clinical methods to detect these patients. Our aim was also to investigate biomarker relationships with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and the importance of PAD in patients’ long-term outcomes. LÄS MER
