1. Design and synthesis of inhibitors that target the serine protease thrombin, the malarial aspartyl proteases plasmepsin I and II, and the hepatitis C virus NS3 serine protease
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the design, synthesis, and structure-activity relationships of protease inhibitors that target the serine protease thrombin, the malarial aspartic proteases plasmepsin I and II, and the hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3 serine protease. Furthermore, the backgrounds of each of the three types of diseases in question are discussed in detail, and consideration is given as to why it is assumed that inhibition of the mentioned proteases will help prevent or cure cardiovascular diseases, malaria, and hepatitis C. 2. Role of Islet Endothelial Cells in β-cell Function and Growth
Sammanfattning : The pancreatic islets are collections of endocrine cells, dispersed throughout the pancreas. In adult islets, endocrine cells are closely associated with capillary endothelial cells and receive a high blood perfusion. Transplanted pancreatic islets, on the other hand, have a vascular disturbance, manifested as decreased blood vessel density. LÄS MER
3. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. LÄS MER
4. Biomimetic Transition Metal Catalysts : Insights from Theoretical Modeling
Sammanfattning : The scientific interest in the chemistry of synthetic transition metal complexes is motivated by at least two arguments:1.These can be regarded as models of biological transition metal complexes, e.g. metalloenzymes, whose functions can be difficult to reveal in detail due to their complexity.
