  1. 6. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Författare :Liza Grapensparr; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Mia Phillipson; Aileen King; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Islets of Langerhans; beta cells; diabetes; transplantation; vascularization; Schwann cells; endothelial progenitor cells; neural crest stem cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Predictors of long-term glycemic control, pancreatic function and BMI trajectory in children with type 1 diabetes

    Författare :Annika Grönberg; Per-Ola Carlsson; Anders Forslund; Klas Ekström; Gun Forsander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology; Pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The maintenance of normal metabolic control underpins all management of insulin dependent diabetes whether in terms of preserved beta-cell function, body composition, or family support. The hypothesis of this work was that preserved C-peptide predicts better glycemic control and lowers risk of severe hypoglycemia. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Role of Islet Endothelial Cells in β-cell Function and Growth

    Författare :Magnus Johansson; Leif Jansson; Per-Ola Carlsson; Lena Holm; Susan Bonner-Weir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The pancreatic islets are collections of endocrine cells, dispersed throughout the pancreas. In adult islets, endocrine cells are closely associated with capillary endothelial cells and receive a high blood perfusion. Transplanted pancreatic islets, on the other hand, have a vascular disturbance, manifested as decreased blood vessel density. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Författare :Åsa Johansson; Per-Ola Carlsson; JanOve Sehlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; islet transplantation; endothelial cells; engraftment; beta cells; Diabetology; Diabetologi; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Bariatric surgery as treatment of type 2 diabetes – clinical and mechanistic aspects

    Författare :Petros Katsogiannos; Jan Eriksson; Magnus Sundbom; Per-Ola Carlsson; Daniel Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Roux-en-y gastric bypass; Type 2 diabetes; incretins; cytokines; adipokines; adipose tissue; heart rate variability; quality of life.; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Bariatric surgery can rapidly improve glycemic control and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with T2D and obesity. These improvements appear to be partly independent of weight loss, however, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. LÄS MER
