11. Intracellular and peptide interactions of C-peptide
Sammanfattning : Proinsulin C-peptide is depleted together with insulin in type I diabetic patients. The supplement of insulin to these patients is necessary for their survival, but it is also likely that the loss of C-peptide may contribute to both short- and long-term complications. In this thesis, molecular effects of C-peptide have been investigated. LÄS MER
12. The endocrine heart - metabolic actions of atrial natriuretic peptide
Sammanfattning : Abstract The natriuretic peptides (NPs), namely atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and bran natriuretic peptide (BNP), which are secreted from cardiomyocytes in response to cardiac wall stress, play a significant role in the regulation of blood pressure, intravascular volume, and cardiac remodeling. Recently, NPs emerged as hormones with metabolic actions such as inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system and inhibition of inflammation, together with lipolysis and adipose tissue browning. 13. Interaction Between Antimicrobial Peptides and Phospholipid Membranes : Effects of Peptide Length and Composition
Sammanfattning : Due to increasing problems with bacterial resistance development, there is a growing need for identifying new types of antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides constitute an interesting group of substances for this purpose, since they are believed to act mainly by disrupting the bacterial membrane, which is a fast and non-specific mechanism. 14. Conformational Studies of Biologically Active Peptides
Sammanfattning : In this work conformational studies have been performed on peptides from four different systems in an attempt to gain knowledge about their biological function. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in combination with distance geometry and restrained molecular dynamics simulations were the methods used. 15. Polymeric Nanoparticles as Carriers for Antimicrobial Peptides : Factors Affecting Peptide and Membrane Interactions
Sammanfattning : As resistance towards conventional antibiotics is becoming more pronounced, cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have received considerable attention as possible therapeutic alternatives. Thousands of potent AMPs occur in humans, animals, plants and fungi as a natural part of the immune system. LÄS MER
