  1. 1. On customization of orthopedic implants - from design and additive manufacturing to implementation

    Författare :Marie Cronskär; Mats Tinnsten; Mikael Bäckström; Lars-Erik Rännar; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Patient-specific implants; Additive manufacturing; Electron beam melting; Multibody musculoskeletal analysis; Orthopedic implants; Clavicle; Finite element analysis; Computer aided design; Osteosynthesis plate; Hip stem implants;

    Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis is devoted to studying the possibilities of using additive manufacturing (AM) and design based on computed tomography (CT), for the production of patient-specific implants within orthopedic surgery, initially in a broad perspective and, in the second part of the thesis focusing on customized clavicle osteosynthesis plates. The main AM method used in the studies is the Electron Beam Melting (EBM) technology. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Functional Aspects of Cranial Implants : Mechanical and Regenerative Properties

    Författare :Susanne Lewin; Caroline Öhman-Mägi; Cecilia Persson; Harry van Lenthe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Calcium phosphate; Ti-6Al-4V; composites; mechanical properties; finite element methods; cranial implants; computed tomography; quantitative image analysis; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot materialvetenskap; Engineering Science with specialization in Materials Science;

    Sammanfattning : In several neurosurgical procedures, the skull must be temporarily opened. The resulting bone defect can subsequently be reconstructed with a cranial implant. However, the complication rate of this surgical procedure is high (~20%). The most common complication for cranial implants is infection. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Biomechanical Analysis of Stress and Stiffness of New Load-Bearing Implants

    Författare :Jinxing Huo; E. Kristofer Gamstedt; Benedikt Helgason; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Engineering science with specialization in Applied Mechanics; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tillämpad mekanik;

    Sammanfattning : Medical implants are essential products for saving lives and improving life quality. Nowadays, the demand for implants, especially biocompatible and personalized ones, is increasing rapidly to deal with factors like congenital malformations, aging, and increasing prevalence of cancer. 4. 4. On the management of some technical and biological complications in implant prosthodontics

    Författare :S Luterbacher-Tschudin; Malmö högskola; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The use of osseointegrated titanium implants has become a widely accepted method to obtain retention for prosthetic reconstructions of partially dentate and edentulous patients. A range of c1inical long-term studies have been conducted to collect information on the numbers of surviving and/or successful implants for different implant systems. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Verification of Dose Calculation Algorithms in Treatment Planning Systems for External Radiation Therapy: A Monte Carlo Approach

    Författare :Elinore Wieslander; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiotherapy; dose calculation algorithm; verification; Monte Carlo calculation; electron beam; photon beam; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; treatment planning system;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a new verification concept, the virtual accelerator, for dose calculation algorithms used in treatment planning systems (TPSs) for external beam radiotherapy. The algorithm input data required to implement a treatment unit in the TPS are generated by Monte Carlo simulations as are the beam reference data needed for the subsequent evaluation of the dose calculation algorithm.
