  1. 1. Evolutionary Resolutions of Conflicts with Mates and Offspring

    Författare :Roger Härdling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Clutch evolution; Arms race; Idothea baltica; Evolutionary conflicts; Sexual conflicts; Parent-offspring; Endosperm; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In sexual conflicts and conflicts between parents and offspring, natural selection acts in different directions on the two sides. For example, males may be selected to achieve many mates, but female fitness may be maximised by monogamy. In this thesis I study the evolutionary outcome of these situations mainly by theoretical modelling. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On the Ecology and Evolution of seed and Bud Dormancy

    Författare :Patric Nilsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bet-hedging; overcompensation; herbivory; plant compensatory growth; bud dormancy; endosperm; seed provisioning; Seed dormancy; parent-offspring conflicts; Ecology; Ekologi; Botany; Botanik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis considers the ecological and evolutionary significance of seed and bud dormancy. First, I present theoretical support to the idea that seed dormancy may evolve as a strategy to reduce sib competition in temporally homogeneous environments. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Quantitative Genetics and Genome Structure in a Wild Population: the Use of a Great Reed Warbler Pedigree

    Författare :Mikael Åkesson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genome mapping ; AFLP; microsatellite; synteny; heterochiasmy; recombination; chicken; great reed warbler ; bird; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik; Animal ecology; trait correlation ; Djurekologi; animal model ; selection; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; animal morphology; Animal anatomy; heritability;

    Sammanfattning : Long-term studies of birds play an important role in the understanding of quantitative traits in natural populations. The relative ease by which individual birds can be monitored and caught in the wild enable us collect detailed information from individuals throughout their life time, sometimes from several generations in a population. 4. 4. Detecting Deletions by Analysis of Genetic Markers in Pedigrees

    Författare :Anna Johansson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytogenetics; Genetik; Genetics; Biologi; genetic marker; pedigree; Protein S deficiency; Biology; PROS1; deletion; null allele; cytogenetik;

    Sammanfattning : A deletion is defined as a missing piece of a chromosome, ranging in size from as small as a single base pair to as much as an entire arm of a chromosome. Deletions can cause diseases, but may also have a neutral effect in the genome. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Trinucleotide repeats and neuropsychiatric phenotypes

    Författare :Qiu-Ping Yuan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Trinucleotide; repeat expansion; psychiatric disorder; gene; spastic paraplegia;

    Sammanfattning : Genetic studies of affective disorders have yielded several chromosomal regions suggestive for linkage. Linkage analysis was performed in five families with unipolar affective disorder, collected from northern Sweden. Four candidate regions on chromosomes 16, 18, 21 and 4p were excluded. LÄS MER
