    Sammanfattning : Islet transplantation has found its niche in diabetes treatment. It has contributed to a better quality of life and better glycemic control of patients with diabetes suffering from severe hypoglycemia that are not eligible for vascularized pancreas transplantation. Islet isolation is a technically challenging procedure. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Potential Therapeutic Applications of Novel Bioengineered Tissues and Organs Using Methods of Decellularization and Recellularization

    Författare :Vijay Kumar Kuna; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Tissue engineering; Decellularization; Recellularization; Saphenous vein; Bioreactor; Wound healing; Skin gel; Pancreas; Kidneys; Ephrins; Human fetal stem cells;

    Sammanfattning : The transplantation of personalized organs or tissues will benefit patients with various diseases and disorders. Decellularization is a method to generate an acellular, non-immunogenic natural scaffold. LÄS MER

  3. 3. On macrophage contributions to tissue homeostasis : New insights on pancreas development and healing of ischemic injury

    Författare :Carmen Herrera Hidalgo; Mia Phillipson; Andrés Hidalgo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :macrophages; islets of Langerhans; β cell function; postnatal β cell maturation; hindlimb ischemia; blood flow regulation; mural cells; vessel pruning; diabetes mellitus; ischemic diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Besides providing host defence against innumerable threats, macrophages display additional key functions for preservation of tissue homeostasis. This thesis includes four studies that explore novel macrophage functions in both the development of islets of Langerhans and healing of ischemic injury in mice. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The Colours of Diabetes : advances and novel applications of molecular optical techniques for studies of the pancreas

    Författare :Christoffer Nord; Ulf Ahlgren; Ian Smyth; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Optical projection tomography; Technique development; Near-infrared; 3D visualization; Biomedical imaging; ß-cell mass; Diabetes; Vibrational micro spectroscopy;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes is a rapidly increasing health problem. In a global perspective,approximately 415 million people suffered from diabetes in 2015 and this number ispredicted to increase to 640 million by 2040. To tackle this pandemic there is a needfor better analytical tools by which we can increase our understanding of the disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Studies of sulfatide expression in relation to beta cell function

    Författare :Maria K. Blomqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :sulfatide; glycosphingolipid; insulin; beta cell; diabetes mellitus; animal models; ; beta cell line;

    Sammanfattning : Previous studies have shown that the glycosphingolipid sulfatide (3´-sulfogalactosyl-ceramide) is present and functionally involved in pancreatic beta cells. In these cells, sulfatide is synthesised as two major isoforms, C16:0 and C24:0 sulfatide, with different length of the fatty acid chain of the ceramide moiety. LÄS MER
