  1. 1. Acidification trends in Swedish lakes : an assessment of past water chemistry conditions using lake sediments

    Författare :Tom Korsman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeolimnology; acidification history; alkalization; acid deposition; land-use; lake sediments; near infrared spectroscopy; diatoms; multivariate calibration; Sweden;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents temporal perspectives of lake acidification in Sweden. Sediment records have been used to study timing, trends and causes of acidification, and two different techniques for assessing past lake-water acidity are presented. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The Eemian Interglacial at Sokli, northern Finland : A multi-proxy environmental and climatic reconstruction based on a 9 m long lacustrine sediment sequence

    Författare :Anna Plikk; Karin F. Helmens; Oliver Heiri; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Last Interglacial MIS5e ; northern Europe; palaeolimnology; palaeoecology; temperature reconstruction; multiple proxies; climate dynamics; climatic events; kvartärgeologi; Quaternary Geology;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding the fundamentals of the Earth’s climate system during the Quaternary Period (the past ca 2.6 million years) is of imminent interest in light of the reported recent climatic changes. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The palaeolimnological record of regime shifts in lakes in response to climate change

    Författare :Linda Randsalu Wendrup; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; palaeolimnology; regime shifts; thresholds; alternative stable states; climate change; ecosystem dynamics; diatoms; hydrocarbons; monitoring; lake sediments; shallow lakes; 8.2 ka event;

    Sammanfattning : Regime shifts in lake ecosystems can occur in response to both abrupt and continuous climate change, and the imprints they leave in palaeolimnological records allow us to investigate and better understand patterns and processes governing ecological changes on geological time scales. This thesis aims at investigating palaeolimnological records of regime shifts in lakes during the Holocene to explore how lake ecosystems responded to climate changes and anthropogenic activities and to identify thresholds or tipping points that produced regime shifts. 4. 4. Past environmental and climate changes in northern Tanzania : Vegetation and lake level variability in Empakaai Crater

    Författare :Maria Ryner; Karin Holmgren; Peter Kuhry; Lars-Ove Westerberg; Henry Lamb; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; palaeoecology; palaeolimnology; physical and societal factors; Holocene; Tanzania; Lake Emakat; Engaruka; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Physical Geography; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents palaeoenvironmental data from equatorial Africa covering two important time intervals; i) the warming period forming the Pleistocene/Holocene transition and ii) the last millennium. The Empakaai Crater, in northern Tanzania contains a lake from where sediment cores, spanning two time-slices 14.8-9. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Palaeoenvironmental changes in the northern boreal zone of Finland: local versus regional drivers

    Författare :Shyhrete Shala; Karin H. Helmens; Christian Bigler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeolimnology; Palaeoecology; Biological assemblages; Sediment geochemistry; Regional drivers; Local drivers; Quantitative temperature reconstructions; Transfer-functions; Holocene; MIS 5d-c; Northern boreal zone; NE Finland; kvartärgeologi; Quaternary Geology;

    Sammanfattning : Multiple proxies derived from the Lake Loitsana sediment sequence (NE Finland) are employed to determine the timing of deglaciation, characterise an early Holocene proglacial lake stage and reconstruct Holocene lake development. Local-scale processes causing shifts in biological assemblages are identified and the most likely Holocene mean July air temperature (Tjul) development is assessed. LÄS MER
