  1. 1. Malaria on islands : human and parasite diversities and implications for malaria control in Vanuatu

    Författare :Akira Kaneko; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; Plasmodium vivax; glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency; CYP2C19; dihydrofolate reductase; cycloguanil; proguanil; mass drug administration; diversity; island; Vanuatu; Pacific;

    Sammanfattning : The genetic diversities displayed by human and malaria parasites at different frequencies in different geographical areas represent a major obstacle for the development of malaria control strategies including malaria chemotherapy and malaria vaccine. We investigated some genetic diversities on Vanuatu islands with various malaria endemicities. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Diversification on an ancient Darwinian island : Evolutionary history of caddisflies (Trichoptera) and other organisms on New Caledonia

    Författare :Marianne Espeland; Kjell Arne Johanson; Niklas Wahlberg; Michael Balke; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :New Caledonia; Trichoptera; island; biogeography; phylogenetics; DNA; dispersal; vicariance; adaptation; ultramafic; diversification; new species; environmental factors; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Islands are either of continental or oceanic origin, and the biota of such islands are a result of vicariance and dispersal, respectively. New Caledonia, in the South Pacific, is a part of former Gondwana, but the origin of its biota is heavily debated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. To be together or not to be together : Ca. 100 million years of evolutionary history of the earliest divergent Frankia clade

    Författare :Fede Berckx; Katharina Pawlowski; Barbara Reinhold-Hurek; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; root nodule symbiosis; Frankia; actinorhizal symbiosis; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Root nodule symbiosis evolved ca. 100 Mya between a nitrogen-fixing bacterium and the common ancestor to the Fabales, Fagales, Rosales, and Cucurbitales plant orders. Over time the majority of the lineages derived from this ancestor lost their symbiotic capability. LÄS MER

  4. 4. (Re)Creating Ecological Action Space : Householders' Activities for Sustainable development in Sweden

    Författare :Karin Skill; Elin Wihlborg; Per Gyberg; Susan Baker; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Sustainable development; households; ecological action space; structuration theory; political participation; environmental problems; gender; Hållbar utveckling; hushåll; ekologiskt handlingsutrymme; politiskt deltagande; miljöproblem; genus; struktureringsteori; Technology and social change; Teknik och social förändring;

    Sammanfattning : Where does my individual responsibility for the environment start and end? Should I be responsible for environmental stress in India only because my shoes were produced there, or for climate change that endangers species in Antarctica, or rising sea levels on Pacific islands which just might have been caused by my driving? What do I need to do if I think it is my responsibility? And how do I decide which is a better alternative from an environmental point of view? Who should I trust when deciding on what action to take, and what opportunities do I need for acting?This multidisciplinary thesis takes the politicization of everyday household activities due to environmental consequences, and individualization of responsibility, as its starting points. These points make it increasingly important to understand what responsibility individuals experience, and how they act in accordance with these perceptions. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Tubificids with trifid chaetae: morphology and phylogeny of Heterodrilus (Clitellata, Annelida)

    Författare :Erica Sjölin; Christer Erséus; Lena Gustavsson; Mari Källersjö; Katrine Worsaae; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Heterodrilus; phylogeny; morphology; Tubificidae; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Systematic Zoology; systematisk zoologi;

    Sammanfattning : Heterodrilus is a marine group of small (3-25 mm) clitellates that occur interstitially in sandy sediments from the intertidal zone down to about 150 m depths. The taxon includes 42 valid species and has been recorded from localities in the Mediterranean Sea, the North-west Atlantic Ocean (including the Caribbean), the Galapagos Islands, and the Indo-Pacific Region.
