1. Dynamic Mechanical Studies of Wood, Paper and some Polymers Subjected to Humidity Changes
Sammanfattning : The dynamic mechanical response of several hygroscopic materials including wood (Scots pineveneer), paper (unbleached sulphate), cellophane, polyamide 6 (PA6) and poly(vinyl acetate)(PVAc) have been studied especially under conditions of a stepwise varying humidity in the atmosphere surrounding the samples. In all cases the in phase and out of phase components of the force necessary to achieve a given deformation were measured for various oscillation frequencies (from 0. LÄS MER
2. Exploring medical applications of a bioactive polymer
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we have studied a polymeric compound called PVAC, designed as a scavenger of reactive electrophilic substances. We explored several diseases where these substances are overproduced. In Paper I, adhesion formation was induced via bowel anastomosis surgery in rats. LÄS MER
3. Hemicelluloses and other Polysaccharides for Wood Adhesive Applications
Sammanfattning : The growing environmental awareness has led to an increased interest in bio-based polymers as replacement for fossil-based materials. The purpose of the work described in this thesis was to investigate the possibility of using hemicelluloses and other polysaccharides as replacement for fossil-based polymers in wood adhesives. 4. Nanostructured Cellulose Biocomposites : Effects from dispersion, network and interface
Sammanfattning : The major load bearing component in native wood, cellulose nanofibrils, are potential candidates for use as reinforcement in polymer matrices. This study is based on nanocellulose composites and attempts to prepare and characterize biocomposites with high nanocellulose content and investigate the influence of nanostructure on macroscopic properties. 5. Outcome and prevention strategies in peritoneal adhesion formation
Sammanfattning : Peritoneal adhesions occur in up to 93% of adults after peritoneal trauma during surgery. Most adhesions are asymptomatic but can cause female infertility, small bowel obstruction (SBO) and chronic abdominal pain. Adhesion prophylaxis is needed to reduce the significant morbidity and increased health care costs resulting from peritoneal adhesions. LÄS MER
