16. The osteogenic potential of human mesenchymal stem cells: Novel markers and key factors for differentiation
Sammanfattning : Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stem cells with ability to differentiate into cells of the connective tissue lineage, such as adipocytes, osteoblasts and chondrocytes, both in vitro and in vivo. The main objective of the present thesis was to study different aspects of the osteogenic potential of MSCs. LÄS MER
17. Genes predisposing to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular mortality
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular complications are frequent in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular death is the most common cause of death for these individuals. A region on chromosome 19 (19q13) has been indicated by several genome scans as a susceptibility locus for T2D or components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). LÄS MER
18. A study on the role of T helper cells in allergic inflammation
Sammanfattning : Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Central to the development of asthma and allergic airway inflammation are CD4 T cells, which upon activation through their T cell antigen receptor, differentiate into T helper (Th) cells with the potential to secrete distinct sets of cytokines. 19. Studies on nuclear receptors involved in drug metabolism
Sammanfattning : The molecular basis for drug metabolism is starting to emerge as a result of cloning and characterization of a group of nuclear receptors that respond to drugs by transcriptional regulation of key genes encoding enzymes involved in metabolism of commonly used drugs. This thesis describes the identification and functional, as well as the structural, characterization of one of these receptors, the human pregnenolone activated receptor (hPAR, NR1I2) that also has been referred to as the pregnane X receptor (PXR) or the steroid and xenobiotic receptor (SXR) by others. 20. Inflammatory transcription factors in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Transcription factors such as nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB), activator protein-1 (AP-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) may play important roles in atherogenesis, by regulating chronic subclinical vascular inflammation. In the first study, we showed that VLDL activates the proinflammatory transcription factor NF-kB in endothelial cells both in vitro and in vivo. LÄS MER
