1. Regulation of glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells
Sammanfattning : Glucagon secreted by pancreatic α-cells plays an important role in the regulation of blood glucose. In this thesis, different techniques such as electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry and hormone secretion assay were combined to explore the mechanisms by which glucagon secretion is regulated. 2. The expression and function of protein kinase C isoforms in differentiating neuroblastoma cells
Sammanfattning : The human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y can be induced to differentiate into a neuronal sympathetic phenotype after treatment with 16 nM 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA) in serum, or by a combination of the growth factors basic fibroblast growth factor and insulin-like growth factor-I (bFGF/IGF-I). SH-SY5Y cells stably transfected with TrkA, the nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor, differentiate in response to NGF. LÄS MER
3. Ocular function and morphology in humans and rabbits exposed to vigabatrin medication
Sammanfattning : Vigabatrin is an antiepileptic drug that is known to cause visual field defects and retinal dysfunction measured by full-field electroretinography (ff-ERG). Underlying mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. LÄS MER
4. Leishmania donovani Lipophosphoglycan : Modulation of Macrophage and Dendritic Cell Function
Sammanfattning : Leishmania donovani is a blood-borne tropicial parasite, which infects humans through bites by Phlebotomus sandflies. The parasite survives and multiplies inside macrophages in inner organs, and causes the deadly disease visceral leishmaniasis (Kala-Azar). LÄS MER
5. Cellular targets of HAMLET, their role in tumor cell death and therapeutic potential
Sammanfattning : Protein-lipid complexes have broad and specific effects against cancers of different origins. HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells) is a complex of partially unfolded α-lactalbumin and oleic acid that kills a wide range of tumor cells but leaves healthy differentiated cells unaffected.
